I stayed up late to watch TV series last night, and my face was swollen like a steamed bun the next day. I urgently needed a cup of “magic anti-swelling”. When I was rummaging through the boxes and cabinets, I saw half a bag of coix seeds and the only remaining lemon in the corner – I didn’t expect that this temporary combination would become my most surprising life-saving water this summer.
Soak the barley the night before, and throw it directly into the health pot in the morning, add enough water, and let it simmer slowly for 40 minutes. While I’m free, I warm the lemon in water and roll it with my palms. The juice is instantly abundant, then cut two slices for flavor, and save the remaining half for the final squeeze. When the barley is cooked until it blooms, the soup has turned light milky white. Turn off the heat and let the heat drop slightly before adding the lemon slices – high temperature will force out the bitter oil in the lemon peel, so don’t rush this step. Finally, add a few drops of honey and a little sea salt, and the taste is instantly three-dimensional: the first thing you taste is the refreshing sourness of the lemon, followed by the grain fragrance of the barley melting on the tip of the tongue, but the sweetness returns at the end, as if sweeping away the stickiness of the sultry weather.
Lemon barley water is a healthy drink for whitening and nourishing the skin, especially loved by young ladies. Barley has the effects of clearing away heat, promoting diuresis, removing edema, and detoxifying. Citric acid can prevent and eliminate skin pigmentation, moisturize and whiten the skin, and can also prevent computer radiation. The whitening effect of these two combined is obvious.
